As you travel, you will discover how wool is produced, be able to purchase luxurious and unique yarns, and spend two days at the famed festival, Wonderwool Wales, while also touring top cultural attractions.Wonderwool Wales, an annual event held every April, celebrates the versatility of Welsh wool from its use in creative crafts to designer clothes. The spacious showcase promotes the region’s wool producers and craftspeople and provides educational and shopping experiences to attendees.Other fiber highlights include a family farm dedicated to creating unique yarns, the National Wool Museum, and the Jen Jones Quilt Centre where Welsh quilts take center stage. You also will be able to trace the eight key sites involved in Devon’s wool production as you follow the Exeter Woollen Trail. You will take in the best of British culture with stops at the Italian-inspired Plas Brondanw Gardens, Caernarfon Castle, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery, Exeter Cathedral, and the ancient stone circle, Stonehenge.

  • Day 1    Tue April 19       Arrive Manchester
Check in at Hilton Hotel at Manchester Airport to meet your tour leader. Your welcome dinner will be followed by a delightful presentation of the rich traditions of British knitting by Julia Halliwell, member of the KC Guild, sharing knits from Gansey and textured Arans, patterned Sanquhar gloves and Shetland laces. (D)

    Day 2    Wed April 20      Manchester-Porthmadog
Travel to Porthmadog, a picturesque harbor town with a delightful range of shops and attractions. Visit Plas Brondanw Gardens – a jewel in the Welsh Crown. Inspired by the gardens of Renaissance Italy, strong architectural influences are evident within the Plas gardens, stone walls, topiary, and avenues of trees leading the eye to the dramatic backdrop of the mountains beyond. Our next stop is Portmeirion Village, a miniature Italianate fantasy village. Designed by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis in 1925, Portmeirion was built in imitation of a rustic Italian village, to demonstrate how a naturally beautiful place could be developed without spoiling it. (B D)

Day 3    Thu April 21      Porthmadog
Visit Meinir’s traditionally run family farm in the picturesque village of Llangian. As a hand knitter herself, Meinir looked at producing a range of wool that was not available as a commercially mass-produced product. (B)

    Day 4   Fri April 22          Porthmadog-Aberystwyth
Travel north to visit the famous Caernarfon Castle, recognized as one of the greatest architectural accomplishments of the Middle Ages. This fortress-palace on the banks of the River Seiont is grouped with Edward I’s other castles at Conwy, Beaumaris, and Harlech as a World Heritage Site. After the visit, experience a scenic steam train ride back to Porthmadog aboard the Ffestiniog Railway, the world's oldest narrow-gauge railway. The train climbs from sea level to over 700 feet into the Snowdonia mountains. (B D)

Day 5    Sat April 23         Aberystwyth
Today enjoy Wonderwool Wales, the UK's premier wool and natural fiber festival. First held in 2006 to promote Welsh wool and to add value to goods made by small producers, the festival celebrates the green credentials of Welsh wool and its versatility for use in creative crafts, designer clothes, home furnishings, and more. (B)

    Day 6   Sun April 24        Aberystwyth-Cardigan
Enjoy a second day at the Wonderwool Wales event before leaving for Cardigan. (B D)

    Day 7   Mon April 25        Cardigan-Bristol
After breakfast, visit the National Wool Museum before travelling to Bristol. Wales is famous for its wool and yarn industries, as well as its blankets and throws. A gallery in the museum shows aspects of the National Flat Textile Collection. Visit Jen Jones Quilt Center in Lampeter, where you will gain an appreciation for Welsh quilts and the importance of this regional art form. (B)

Day 8  Tue April 26         Bristol
Step back through 450 years of history at the impressive Longleat House, a stately Elizabethan country home. Then visit the preserved Lacock Village. With its central grid of four streets, Lacock looks much as it did 200 years ago. (B)

    Day 9   Wed April 27        Bristol-Plymouth
Travel to Plymouth with an en route visit to the fishing town of Brixham. Continue to Buckfast Aggey to gain insight into how Benedictine monks have lived for nearly 1,000 years. (B D)

    Day 10  Thu April 28         Plymouth-St Ives-Plymouth
Enjoy a day excursion to the north coast fishing town of St Ives. The town is built on a narrow peninsula fringed with sandy beaches. Radiating out from the idyllic harbor are a maze of painfully quaint cobbled streets lined with fishermen's cottages. There is time to meet the locals and enjoy lunch before a talk with Q&A time at the shop Gorgeous Yarns. Then visit Pendennis Castle in Falmouth before returning to Plymouth for overnight. (B L)

    Day 11  Fri April 29          Plymouth-Exeter
Travel to Exeter to follow the self-guided Exeter Woollen Trail and explore key sites of the area's most important historical industry, woolen cloth. Also visit the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery, which holds significant and diverse collections in zoology, anthropology, fine art, archaeology, and geology. Finally, visit Exeter Cathedral, one of England's great cathedrals, and an outstanding example of Gothic architecture. (B)

    Day 12  Sat April 30          Exeter-Salisbury-London
Depart Exeter for London with an en route visit to Stonehenge. Dating back to approximately 3000 BC, this circle of huge rectangular stones continues to fascinate all who see it. Enjoy a farewell dinner in the hotel. (B, D)
