This textile and stitching tour to Japan is designed and led by Jane MacDonald, focusing on sashiko, kogin, chiku-chiku, and indigo dyeing with visits to many textile related towns and establishments along the way.




  • Explore Hirosaki, home of Kogin and learn all about kogin-zashi
  • In Yuza, we learn traditional sashiko techniques from a very talented group of inspirational teachers
  • Enjoy a class with Akiko Ike in Niigata and learn Chiku Chiku style of Stitching
  • Visit Arimatsu for shibori dyeing
  • In Takayama, home of Hida sashiko, discover beautiful old fabrics and samples of sashiko and boro
  • Visit the famous needle shop, Nomura Tailor for fabric shopping and wonder around the aromatic Nishiki Market in Kyoto
  • Visit the original Blue and White shop and the Quilt Party shop of famous Yoko Saito

Jane MacDonald has been interested in Japanese textiles and crafts for over twenty years, developing a specialty in the craft of sashiko stitching and design. Initially drawn to the quality and detail in the workmanship of Japanese textiles, Jane now teaches sashiko extensively throughout Australia and internationally.

What is included in the tour price?

  • 14 night’s twin share accommodation at well-appointed hotels
  • 14 Day Japan Rail Pass (ordinary class), return tickets on local train Meitetsu
  • Nagoya-Arimatsu, and private chartered coach during tour as stated in the itinerary
  • Workshops and entrance fees as stated in the itinerary
  • An English-speaking guide during tour
  • Luggage transfer service (one piece per person) Tokyo-Sakata-
  • Meals as stated in the itinerary

What is not included in the tour price?

  • International airfares to Japan
  • Travel insurance
  • Porterage at hotels & personal expenses
  • Gratuities and anything not mentioned


Due to the constant changes in the COVID restrictions worldwide, we highly recommend that passengers wait to purchase air tickets until the following:

1. The tour reaches the minimum number to travel.
2. Prior to the due date of their final payment (three months before departure), we will notify passengers the travel status and the requirements for travel to their destination. At that time they may choose to proceed with the tour or not. If they choose to cancel they may apply their non-refundable deposit to any other Opulent Quilt Journeys Tour within 18 months.
