OVERVIEW

Map Birmingham Festival of Quilts and Textile Tour with the Quilter on Fire

This 12-day journey takes you deep into the heart of Polish creativity, where ancient crafts are still practiced with passion and pride. You'll explore three distinct regions—each with its own artistic identity—working alongside master artisans in hands-on workshops, discovering collections that preserve Poland's cultural heritage, and wandering through historic cities where art and architecture tell stories of resilience and beauty.

From the medieval charm of Kraków to the textile legacy of Łódź and the modern energy of Warsaw, this tour balances immersive craft experiences with cultural exploration. You'll try your hand at traditional embroidery, learn about natural dyeing techniques, visit a living history museum, and shop for authentic folk art directly from the makers. Whether you're a textile artist, a cultural enthusiast, or simply curious about a country where handcraft remains vital and celebrated, this tour offers an insider's perspective on Poland's creative soul.

Tour Leader

Janet McDonald

Janet McDonald began quilting in 2011 when a friend gave her a copy of Roberta Horton’s book An Amish Adventure. She enjoys all aspects of quilting, even binding, and loves to learn new techniques. She hand quilts with Dorcas Quilters in San Francisco on Wednesdays and works part-time at New Pieces Quilt Shop in Berkeley. She so much enjoyed her trip to Japan in 2019 that she has begun exploring some of the things that inspired her including shibori, dyeing with indigo and kakishibu (persimmon), and sashiko and kogin (counted sashiko). Outside of the quilting world she still works part-time in her profession as a librarian.
