OVERVIEW

Scotland Heritage Textile Tour Map

This 11-day journey takes you deep into the textile traditions of Bali, from the sacred temples and lush rice terraces of Ubud, through the quiet weaving villages of the Sidemen Valley, to the coastal calm of Candidasa. At the heart of the trip is a three-day batik workshop, at a renowned natural dye studio set in a garden just outside Ubud. Here you’ll learn to draw with hot wax, coax color from plants, and create your own piece using centuries-old Indonesian techniques. Between workshop days, you’ll visit working studios, browse village markets, and experience the kind of craft culture that’s woven into everyday Balinese life.

Whether you’re an experienced textile artist eager to do a deep dive into batiks, or a curious traveler drawn to color, beauty, and handcraft, this tour offers an intimate look at Indonesia’s creative soul paired with exceptional hotels, guided cultural visits, and a slower pace that lets you really take it all in.

Textile workshops & craft immersion

  • Spend three full days at a renowned natural dye studio, learning batik wax-resist techniques using a canting pen and cap stamp alongside expert Balinese artisans
  • Work with plant-sourced natural dyes - extracted from roots, flowers, and bark - to build layered color on your own creative batik project, which you'll complete and bring home
  • Learn to prepare traditional Balinese dishes in a hands-on cooking class at a local family kitchen, using ingredients harvested fresh from the garden

Artisan Studios & Textile Villages

  • Visit one of Bali's best-known batik fabric producers for a behind-the-scenes look at how traditional designs move from sketch to finished cloth at commercial scale
  • Browse batik fabric directly from local makers in Tohpati, recognized as the center of Balinese batik production
  • Watch traditional ikat and geringsing weaving on backstrap and frame looms at a cooperative in the quiet Sidemen Valley, and shop directly from the weavers
  • Explore Denpasar's specialist textile market with a local expert guide, uncovering Indonesian fabrics from across the archipelago

Sacred Bali & Cultural Experiences

  • Visit  Ubud's ornate water palace temple, where carved stone shrines rise above lotus-filled pools
  • Attend a traditional Kecak or Legong dance performance, where elaborately costumed dancers bring Balinese mythology to vivid, dramatic life under the open sky
  •  Visit Goa Lawah, the Sea Temple — a sacred coastal shrine built into a clifftop cave, believed to connect underground to Bali's most holy mountain temple

Landscapes & Local Life

  • Travel through the Sidemen Valley, one of Bali's most scenic and least-touristed regions, where terraced rice paddies climb the foothills of sacred Mount Agung
  • Discover the traditional salt farmers of the Pesinggahan coast, where families harvest sea salt using ancient sun-evaporation methods and sell directly from roadside stalls
  • Explore the quieter east coast of Bali at Candidasa, a relaxed fishing village far from the crowds, with black-sand beaches and a true seaside feel
  • Stay at exceptional hotels along the journey, providing luxury and boutique escapes to finish off your days
