  • This tour is created for those who share the love of travel and exploring with a focus on textiles and quilts, Japan’s rich cultural history and the beauty of the ever-changing Japanese landscape. In addition to a visit to the Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival 2020, the tour will be filled with textile workshops, fabric shopping, museums and sights to create lasting memories.

  • Day 1 - Wed Jan 22   Arrive Tokyo
    On arrival shared transfer takes you to the hotel in Tokyo for check-in.

    Day 2 - Thu Jan 23   Tokyo
    After breakfast we’ll travel by coach and take a stroll through the beautiful Imperial Palace East Garden. Then attend a Japanese cooking class where we will enjoy a Sushi making experience and lunch. We’ll wander through the busy Asakusa district and visit the Senso-ji Temple. This evening we will share a welcome dinner at a local restaurant. (B, L, D)

    Day 3 - Fri Jan 24   Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival
    Today and tomorrow you will have full day pass to the Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival at the Tokyo Dome adjacent to our hotel. This world famous show includes wonderful quilts and special exhibits from around the world as well as a variety of demonstrations and unique shopping opportunities. (B)

    Day 4 - Sat Jan 25   Tokyo 
    Morning attend Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival. In the afternoon, we will visit the historic Nippori Fabric Town, home to nearly 100 shops carrying all sorts of fabric and notions.  We’ll make a stop at Tokyu Hands Shop. (B)

    Day 5 - Sun Jan 26   Tokyo-Kawaguchi Lake
    Today we will travel by coach to Kawaguchico Lake with a stop at the beautiful Itchiku Kubota Museum to see the stunning Kubota Kimono Collection. We’ll also make a stop at the Muse Museum, home of the captivating dolls created by Yuki Atae. This evening we’ll enjoy the view from our Onsen Hotel. (B, D)

    Day 6 - Mon Jan 27   Kawaguchi Lake-Mishima-Kyoto
    After breakfast, we’ll be catching the train to Kyoto where we visit the Kyoto Museum of Traditional Crafts, which houses beautiful representative works of many of Japan’s finest crafts.  We’ll end our day with a walk through Kyoto’s best known Geisha quarter – Gion District. (B)

    Day 7 - Tue Jan 28   Kyoto-Arimatsu-Kyoto
    Following breakfast, we travel to Arimatsu – the center of Shibori dyeing dating back to the early 17th century. We’ll visit the Narumi Tie-Dyeing Museum and participate in a Shibori-dyeing workshop. Explore the town before return to Kyoto.  (B)

    Day 8 - Wed Jan 29   Kyoto
    This morning we’ll travel by coach to Hiedaira to visit the Kyoto studio of world famous Quilt artist, Yoshiko Jinzenji. We’ll then stop at Kyoto’s Kitchen – Nishiki Food Market and browse through the shops at the Shinkyogoku Shopping Street visiting the 400 year old Misuyabari Needle Store and the iconic Nomura Tailor, filled with 3 floors of everything for last-minute fabric shopping.     Day 9 - Thu Jan 30   Kyoto
    Our final day of touring, we’ll travel by coach to the spectacular Kinkakuji Temple, known as the Golden Pavilion. Later, we will be participating in a Rocketsu dyeing workshop using a traditional wax-resist dyeing method.  In the afternoon, we visit the intriguing Fushimi Inari Shrine. The magical, seemingly unending path of over 5000 vibrant orange torii gates that wind through the hills behind Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine makes it one of the most popular shrines in Japan. This evening we will share our farewell dinner at a local restaurant. (B, D)

    Day 10 - Fri Jan 31   Depart Kyoto
    Our tour ends after breakfast. Limousine bus takes you to the airport for your onward flight. (B)

    Hotel Rooms in Japan: Please note that there are limited ‘double-bedded’ rooms available in most Japanese hotels. Most rooms for two persons are ‘twin-bedded’. Most hotels in Japan have single rooms which are smaller rooms with a single bed and private facilities. The single supplement is based on a single room. If you wish to have more space we offer a single supplement for a double room for sole use, additional cost will apply please contact us.

    Tour participants will need to carry their own luggage, board a bus unaided, walk a mile, and navigate uneven surfaces including stairs.
